As we charge headlong into the Leagues Cup semifinals, four MLS teams are eagerly anticipating their shot at glory. The trophy, the prize money, and the coveted automatic Concacaf Champions Cup spots are all up for grabs. But amongst the remaining clubs, who stands the best chance of emerging victorious?
Why they could win: Because their ceiling is higher than any other team still standing
The Columbus Crew left jaws on the floor when they put five goals past LAFC on their own turf last month. The Crew have proven their quality over the past year, having clinched the MLS Cup title last season. But to be “four goals better than LAFC” good? That is a whole new level. When they hit their peak, Columbus seems to reach the outer limits of the atmosphere.
Why they could win: Uh, have you looked at this squad?
“There’s no substitute for quality players. And we have quality players,” stated manager Steve Cherundolo following his team’s impressive 3-0 victory over the Sounders in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals. “I mean, Denis Bouanga, for one, who is physically talented, technically talented, who also just loves scoring goals and knows where to be.”
Cherundolo’s emphasis on Bouanga’s abilities is telling – he may be the standout player, but with the likes of Olivier Giroud now on board, LAFC boasts multiple match-winners. When Giroud takes his place in the starting lineup for the first time, the rest of the world better take notice. LAFC’s talent level is more than a match for any of their fellow semifinalists.
