Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi has been dealt a blow with his omission from the national squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. The 37-year-old forward has been sidelined since sustaining a right ankle injury during the Copa America final on July 14. Miami head coach Tata Martino had initially announced that Messi had suffered ligament damage and would be out indefinitely, pending further tests to determine the extent of his injury.
During the Copa America final, Messi appeared to slip on the pitch and required medical attention before being substituted off. Despite his injury, Messi has been spotted at Miami’s MLS games and other matches, showing his support to his teammates from the sidelines. The former Barcelona star has had a disrupted season, playing only 15 games for Miami due to his international commitments and injuries, but still managed to contribute with 14 goals and 11 assists.
In the absence of Messi, Argentina will face Chile and Colombia in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. The team, coached by Lionel Scaloni, currently sits at the top of the CONMEBOL standings with five wins and one draw in six matches.
The Argentina squad for the qualifiers includes goalkeepers Emiliano Martinez, Walter Benitez, Geronimo Rulli, and Juan Musso. The defensive lineup features players like Gonzalo Montiel, Cristian Romero, Nicolas Otamendi, and Nicolas Tagliafico. Among the forwards selected are Lautaro Martinez and Julian Alvarez.
Despite not being able to join his national team, Messi’s presence will surely be missed on the field. As the iconic footballer continues his recovery, fans around the world eagerly await his return to action.
