Brighton & Hove Albion are on the verge of securing a deal to acquire the services of the highly coveted midfielder Diego Gomez from Inter Miami for a hefty sum of £11 million. The 21-year-old player, known for his versatility on the field, is expected to remain with Miami until the conclusion of the 2024 Major League Soccer season before making the big move to Brighton in January.
Reports from The Athletic back in June had hinted at Brighton’s interest in Gomez, with the Premier League club keen on adding young talent to their roster from various corners of the world. Gomez made the switch to Miami in the summer of 2023 from Club Libertad in Paraguay and has since made a significant impact, tallying 32 appearances and netting seven goals across all competitions.
The young midfielder played a key role in Miami’s triumphant 2023 Leagues Cup campaign, marking the club’s first major trophy win. Despite facing a brief setback due to an ankle injury, Gomez has managed to feature in 20 games during the ongoing 2024 season, showcasing his adaptability by playing in different midfield positions.
With seven senior international caps for Paraguay under his belt, Gomez has proven his worth on the global stage. His standout performance at this summer’s Paris Olympics, where he captained his country to the quarter-finals, further solidified his reputation as a rising star in the world of football.
A potential move to Brighton would reunite Gomez with his compatriot Julio Enciso, with whom he previously played at Libertad in 2022. The prospect of linking up with Enciso at the club level adds an intriguing dimension to Gomez’s future prospects at Brighton.
Brighton’s aggressive transfer strategy during the last summer window saw them make nine new signings, splurging a total of £195 million to bolster their squad. Among the new arrivals were standout names like Yankuba Minteh, Amario Cozier-Duberry, and Georginio Rutter, for whom the club shelled out a record fee of £40 million.
As Gomez prepares to embark on a new chapter in his career with Brighton, the expectations are high for the young midfielder to make a significant impact in the Premier League. His blend of skill, versatility, and international experience make him a valuable asset for Brighton as they look to elevate their performance on the domestic front.
