This past season in Chicago seemed to blend in with the rest of the forgettable seasons in the city over the past 15 years. The team spent money, lost games, played at different stadiums, had some young players show flashes of potential, and ultimately lost more games.
Despite the lackluster season, sporting director Heitz had one of his better winter transfer windows. They splurged on DP No. 9 Hugo Cuypers, who has proven to be pretty good and could thrive in Berhalter’s system. This is a significant improvement compared to previous DPs signed during Heitz’s tenure. Additionally, they were able to acquire Kellyn Acosta as a free agent, who has been decent but hasn’t exactly been a game-changer.
Surprisingly, there were no disastrous contracts signed or unwarranted extensions given out during the season. While there isn’t a significant amount of money coming off the books, there is still potential for additional funds if the owner approves a buy-out, which seems likely.
With players like Brian Gutiérrez, Chris Brady, Andrew Gutman, Allan Arigoni, Carlos Terán, Mauricio Pineda, and Maren Haile-Selassie, along with promising homegrowns, this team isn’t in need of a complete overhaul, despite its struggles.
