Inter Miami’s star player Lionel Messi made his return to training today, after sustaining an ankle injury in the Copa America final. The 37-year-old Argentine has been limited in his participation so far, with head coach Gerardo Martino confirming that Messi is still awaiting medical clearance to fully join team practices.
Speaking to The Athletic, Martino revealed, “There were specific drills that we devised that would allow him a certain level of participation. But he still does not have medical clearance (to play).” Despite Messi’s gradual return to training, the timeline for his recovery remains uncertain.
Messi’s injury, diagnosed as a high ankle sprain, has kept him sidelined and watching from the stands alongside his family at Inter Miami’s matches. Martino emphasized the challenging nature of Messi’s injury, stating, “What’s next for Leo is to be unafraid of the pain or of another potential twisted ankle. This is typical when injuries occur. There’s the physical part and the mental part. If we can gradually reincorporate him into some training sessions with the group, he’ll gain confidence in both areas.”
As Inter Miami leads the Eastern Conference standings, with a recent 2-0 victory over FC Cincinnati extending their lead to eight points with eight regular season matches remaining, the team is hopeful for Messi’s return. Additionally, Inter Miami holds a four-point advantage over the Los Angeles Galaxy in the race for the Supporters’ Shield, awarded to the MLS side with the best overall regular season record.
With Messi’s ongoing rehabilitation and Miami’s strong position in the league, fans eagerly await the superstar’s full recovery and return to action on the field. The team remains optimistic about their prospects for success as they progress through the season.
