In a stunning development of the MLS transfer market, former Borussia Dortmund midfield maestro Marco Reus has officially inked a deal with LA Galaxy on a free transfer. This move, which had been rumored for months, has finally come to fruition as Reus joins the American outfit after his departure from his beloved Dortmund in May.
According to a report by The Athletic back in June, LA Galaxy had been in advanced negotiations to secure the services of the 35-year-old German star. And now, it has been confirmed that Reus has signed a lucrative two-and-a-half-year contract, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2026 MLS season.
LA Galaxy General Manager Will Kuntz expressed his excitement about landing the experienced midfielder, stating, “Marco Reus is a world-class player who has excelled at the highest level of the sport… We look forward to Marco’s contributions to the LA Galaxy as we enter the critical final stretch of the 2024 MLS season and beyond.”
Reus had attracted interest from other MLS clubs as well, including Charlotte FC and St. Louis City. However, the former Germany international ultimately chose the tantalizing prospect of a move to Los Angeles, to the delight of the Galaxy faithful.
Head Coach Greg Vanney shared his elation at the signing, remarking, “We are excited to welcome Marco to the team… He is a proven winner and leader whose talent and vision for the game will integrate seamlessly into the group as we prepare for the restart of the league and the run into the playoffs.”
The departure from Dortmund marks the end of an era for Reus, who spent countless years dazzling fans with his performances at Signal Iduna Park. In his illustrious career with the German giants, Reus featured in 429 matches, netting an impressive 170 goals and providing 131 assists. On the international stage, he represented Germany 48 times, showcasing his immense talent.
Reus’s legacy at Dortmund includes two DFB-Pokal triumphs, two German Supercups, and a significant role in the club’s memorable run to the 2013 Champions League final. Additionally, he was honored as Germany’s footballer of the year in both 2012 and 2019, solidifying his status as one of the country’s most decorated players.
With Reus now set to embark on a new adventure in the MLS with LA Galaxy, fans eagerly anticipate his impact on the team as they gear up for a crucial phase of the season and aim for success in the playoffs. The stage is set for Reus to make his mark in the vibrant world of American soccer.
